A Guide to Qur'an Classes for Adults in Singapore

Many Muslim adults in Singapore share the same quiet wish: to return to the Qur'an properly, this time as a grown-up.

Maybe you learned as a child and have forgotten most of it. Maybe you can read but don't understand a word. Maybe you never really learned at all.

Whatever your starting point, you are not alone — and it is never too late.

This guide is written for the working adult in Singapore who wants to begin (or begin again), and isn't sure where to look.

Why So Many Adults Feel "Behind"

For most Malay-Muslim Singaporeans, Qur'an learning happened in childhood — at the rumah ustaz, weekend madrasah, or family circle.

Then life took over. School, NS, career, marriage, kids.

By the time you look up again, you're 30, 40, 50 — and the mushaf on the shelf feels heavier than it should.

The feeling of being "behind" is almost universal. It is also almost always wrong.

Adult learners bring something children cannot: life experience, focus, and a real hunger for meaning. Teachers repeatedly say that adult students, once they start, tend to progress faster than they expect.

The Main Types of Qur'an Classes Available in Singapore

Not every Qur'an class is the same. Broadly, adult learners in Singapore will encounter four types:

1. Iqra' / basic recitation classes

For adults who need to (re)learn the Arabic letters and how to read the mushaf. Usually beginner-friendly, patient, and paced for people starting from zero.

2. Tajwid classes

For learners who can already read but want to recite correctly — the rules of makhraj, sifat, madd, and so on. These are essential before advancing to tahsin or memorisation.

3. Tadabbur and tafsir classes

For learners who want to understand what they are reading. These focus on meaning, context, and reflection — often working verse by verse or surah by surah.

4. Structured, long-form programmes

Multi-year journeys that combine recitation, tajwid, understanding, and application. These are for adults who want a real, guided arc rather than one-off lessons.

What to Look For in a Teacher

The teacher matters more than the syllabus.

A few things to look for:

  • Proper sanad or recognised training — not just enthusiasm.
  • Experience with adult learners — teaching adults is very different from teaching children.
  • Patience with mistakes — you will mispronounce things. That's the process.
  • A structured path — good teachers know where a beginner needs to be in 3 months, 6 months, a year.
  • Character — the Qur'an is transmitted through people. Learn from someone whose akhlaq you want to be near.

If a class makes you feel small, embarrassed, or judged, it is not the right class. That is not from the Qur'an; that is from a person.

Online, In-Person, or Both?

Since 2020, online Qur'an classes have become normal in Singapore. Each format has real trade-offs.

In-person is usually better for:

  • absolute beginners who need close correction on pronunciation
  • learners who benefit from being physically in a class with others
  • building a long-term relationship with a teacher and community

Online works well for:

  • working adults with unpredictable schedules
  • parents of young children
  • learners outside central areas

Many adults end up doing a hybrid — a weekly in-person anchor class plus online sessions in between.

Common Fears (and Honest Responses)

"I'm too old."

You are not. Adults in their 40s, 50s, 60s, and 70s begin every year in Singapore. Some of them become teachers themselves.

"I don't know any Arabic."

Neither did most of the Sahabah's descendants outside the Arabian peninsula. Structured programmes are designed for exactly this starting point.

"I'll embarrass myself in class."

Everyone in an adult Qur'an class is there for the same reason. The room is full of people who chose to come back. That is not embarrassing — that is beautiful.

"I don't have time."

Most programmes ask for one to two hours a week. That is less than most people spend scrolling on their phones in a single evening.

"I've tried before and stopped."

Then this time, choose a class with structure, community, and a teacher who will notice when you disappear. Consistency is a group project.

How to Begin — A Simple 4-Step Plan

If you are ready to start, keep it small and concrete:

  1. Be honest about your level. Can you read the letters? Read fluently? Understand meaning? Write it down in one sentence.
  2. Pick one class this month. Not five options to compare forever — one class to actually attend.
  3. Commit for eight weeks. Long enough to feel real progress, short enough not to feel trapped.
  4. Tell someone. A spouse, a friend, a study buddy. The Qur'an journey holds better when someone else knows you started.

The hardest step is almost always the first one.
